Tenn. addressing issues cited in Pew report

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee Correction Commissioner George Little says the state is taking steps to address issues in a national report that shows the number of offenders on parole and probation across the United States has surged past 5 million.

Including jail and prison inmates, the Pew Center on the States report says the total population of the U.S. corrections system now exceeds 7.3 million, or 1 of every 31 U.S. adults.

In Tennessee, one in 40 adults is under correctional control, according to the report.

It suggests strengthening community corrections as one solution to possibly curtailing the high numbers and reducing recidivism.

Little says the state is looking to create a "risk and needs assessment" that examines what leads individuals to commit crimes and try to change their behavior.
