Deputies find stolen guns at day-care residence

On the outside, it looks innocent enough.  Jessie's Child Enrichment Child Care operates out of a brick house on Braden Boulevard in Northaven.  But a Shelby County Sheriff's raid Tuesday turned up something else: a .45, a 380 automatic pistol, a .32 and a .22 were all found in the house.

Deputies also found more than 500 rounds of ammunition, and two children, ages one and five.

"One of the most disturbing things is you had kids inside the house at the time of the raid," Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Shular said Wednesday.

Deputies traced the .45  to a home burglary last December.  Someone had filed the serial numbers off of some of the guns.

"That's against the law, and that was also a trigger that these probably were going to be stolen guns," Shular said.

Investigators said none of the guns were found near the children. Two were found in a closet, one under a mattress, and another in the glove box of a car sitting in the driveway of the daycare."

The owner of the daycare has not been charged.

"She said her sons may have brought the guns in the house, but she had no knowledge they were there," Shular said.

Wednesday, Action News 5's Kontji Anthony rang the doorbell at the daycare.  There were cars in front of the home and in the driveway, but no one answered.

They also did not return our phone calls.

Jessie's Child Enrichment Child Care appeared on the state's most recent list of certified daycare centers, receiving a three star rating - the highest possible.

Investigators said it was the third time one of those minors has been in juvenile court for illegal possession of a firearm.  The minors appeared in juvenile court Wednesday, while their big brother, 19-year-old Corteiz Hodge, heads to court Thursday.
