COMO, MS (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Panola County, Mississippi, on Friday morning. Police are searching for the tractor-trailer driver whom they believe struck him.

Officials said the body of Benny Earl Hicks, 39, was found early Friday morning along I-55 southbound around mile marker 256, near the Como exit.

Investigators said Hicks, a Memphis resident, was struck and killed sometime between midnight and 4:00 a.m.

They're searching for the driver of a red tractor-trailer that may have sustained damage to its right fender.

Hicks' body was taken to Jackson, Mississippi, where an autopsy will be performed Saturday.

Meanwhile, the community is mourning the loss of a man who many say committed his life to helping others.

Leon Hogue says he's trying to cope with the death of his dear friend and colleague. "It's a real hurtful thing and I didn't believe it. We were just talking yesterday."

Hicks worked for Calvary Street Ministry. He was director of the walk-in ministry, a drug and alcohol program that provides housing for the homeless, disabled and mentally ill.

"His life was dedicated to helping people, and again we've helped thousands," said Hogue.

Although Calvary Street Ministry is on the verge of shutting its doors due to tough economic times, Hick's colleagues say that didn't stop his commitment. He was in the process of trying to open another halfway house for the 20 men who are still part of the program.

Hicks counseled Billy Woods seven years ago when Woods first joined the program.

"At the time, I was dealing with being a drug addict and alcohol.  At the time, I was dealing with a lot of family problems and issues," said Woods.

Woods says Hicks helped give him and other addicts a second chance at life.

"He's going to be missed. I know that much. I miss him now."
