MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A man accused of beating his girlfriend's baby to death faced a judge Friday morning, at the same time a flag was raised in honor of the 11-month-old victim.

Memphis police say 11-month-old Brennan Rayford is the first child to be killed by an adult this year.  Friday, The Memphis Child Advocacy Center raised a flag to remember Brennan, and remind people that there is still work to be done to stop child abuse.

While the flag hasn't been seen for two months, Nancy Williams, Director of the Child Advocacy Center, said the two month break came after the most deadly year for children in Shelby County.

In 2008, the flag was raised for 14 children, Williams said.

In Brennan's case, police say his mother's boyfriend was baby sitting the 11-month-old while she was at work.  Police say 26-year-old Jamaal Eddie killed Brennan by hitting him to keep him quite.

Williams says mothers need to be careful about who they leave their children with.

"When you compare a child to, say a diamond, you wouldn't just take a diamond and say, 'Oh here, hold this.'  But yet every day, there are parents who we hope will stop and think and say, 'Who is my child being cared for by?'" Williams said.

Records show Eddie has a history of domestic violence.  He's now charged with first degree murder.

Williams said Tennessee law requires residents report reasonable suspicions they have that a child is being abused.
