Groups rally to support Hernando-area troops

HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - The yellow ribbon is a symbol of the support our military personnel get whenever they are deployed overseas.  Friday, it was on full display as National Guard Troop Co. A, 2-198 in Hernando prepared for a May deployment to Iraq.

To show their support, a group of local organizers is working to make life for those left at home a bit easier.

"I don't want our soldiers having to be concerned about what's going on at home, as far as a car breaking down," First Sgt. John Beasley said. "I don't want my guys focusing on getting a car back on the road. I want them focusing on the mission at hand."

The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, along with Volunteer North Mississippi, are joining with the Exchange Club to coordinate 'Community Services for Soldiers Families'.

"The sergeant has made it clear that he's not looking for charity," the Community Foundation's Tom Pittman said. :He just wants support for the troops."

This would be done with the help of businesses and volunteers that would step in to take care of things that need to be done for any family that needs it.

This is the third time the unit from Hernando has been deployed.  Liz Adams and her husband, Dennis, have been through this before.  They say knowing you have the support of the community gives you comfort.

"It's awesome, its very warming, its touching, and its really awesome for me to go to the other 150 spouses or sometimes mothers and let them know that your not alone," Liz said.

If you, or your church or business would like to help support the troops, contact the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi at 662-449-5005. You will then be added to a database and called if needed.
