Tipton County deploys new radar

TIPTON CO., TN (WMC-TV) - Speeders beware - one west Tennessee department has a new tool to help slow you down.

A mobile radar is now being used by Tipton County deputies to crack down on drivers with a heavy foot.  The radar tells drivers as far as a mile away just how fast they're going.

It also warns speeding drivers with a flashing strobe light and written message to slow down.

"It's going to reduce the number of speeders on the streets and hopefully reduce the number of crashes," said Byran Childress of the Tipton County Sheriff's Department.

"Based on info from GIS, we will be placing this radar in strategic locations to make citizens aware of their speed and decrease speeding and crashes," said Chief Billy Daugherty of the Tipton County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say about 60 percent of crashes in Tipton County are speed related.

The new radar comes at no cost to taxpayers - it was funded through grant money from the Tennessee Governor's Highway Safety office.
