SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Mississippi hunters and fishermen will soon have to shop for bait, bows, and tackle in a new place.

Sportsman's Warehouse in Southaven, a very popular place for those who enjoy the great outdoors, is also the latest victim of the economic downturn and will soon close its doors.

"Basically, they let us know that they were going to be closing 23 stores across the country, and that both Southaven and Memphis were on that list," General Manager Keith Gish said Wednesday.

It's a list that continues to grow in the same area where Circuit City, World Market and Linens 'N Things stores have recently closed or will close soon.

Gish said he knew about some changes in the works, but was shocked the Southaven Sportsman's Warehouse would be a casualty because business has been good.

"It shocked us, the stores they did decide to close," he said. "We never expected that they would be closing the Southaven location."

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said while it is unfortunate stores are closing locally due to the national economy, the city continues to recruit new businesses.

"While a city can't control what happens to a nationwide company, we can control and try to recruit new businesses back in, so that we show that our doors are open for business," he said.

For Gish and his 60 employees, this is a very difficult situation at a very bad time.

"We are a tight knit family here," he said. "We love our jobs. We love working at this store. We love the environment we work in. There's nothing else like it for us to go to at this time."

Gish said liquidators will be coming soon to begin marking down prices.
