Mid-South man forges career out of making belts

MILLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - If you watch championship wrestling, you've seen a number of Dave Millican belts.

"If you can dream it, we can pretty much make it, and if you can think it up, we can make it," Millican said.

Just ask clients like wrestlers Jerry Lawler, Rick Flair and Hulk Hogan.  From his tiny garage north of Millington, Millican also makes belts for boxers and baseball players. Even pop star Madonna wanted a belt for her new CD.

"So you know that's a weird day when you get a call from representatives for Madonna," Millican said.

Millican belts are popular in Japan and Europe too.  He likes to work while watching his buddy Jerry Lawler and other classic wrestlers on TV.  His work has come a long way from the first belt he made as a teenager.

"You know, I used to make card board belts and draw them up and paint them," he said.

Now, Millican says, he has the best job in the world, and he plans to do it forever.

"I'm going to ride it as long as it lasts," he said. "I always tell my wife...I will hate the day that it ends, 'cause then I got to get a real job I guess."

Millican credits Jerry Lawler and belt making guru Reggie Parks with getting him started.
