MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man is in jail after an assault in the Cooper-Young area.
A woman was on Evelyn Avenue when an unknown man approached her from behind and assaulted her Wednesday night.
Investigators determined Odie Battles, 34, to be responsible for the attack.
Battles is charged with assault, attempted aggravated sexual battery, and attempted aggravated kidnapping.
“It was like blood-curdling screaming,” said Donna McDonnell.
McDonnell works from home and heard the cries for help.
The victim said she was jogging in the area and saw Battles in an alley behind a market on Cooper.
She said she noticed him messing with his pants, and the next thing she knew, he tackled her from behind, forcing her to the ground. She fought him off, screamed, and neighbors ran to help.
The victim said that that Battles just wandered away after the attack, and police were able to arrest him immediately.
“The fact that even happened in broad daylight in front of my house is pretty concerning,” said neighbor Lara Thornton.
Neighbors said they’re shocked by the crime.
“It’s troubling, it’s unusual, because most of the time it’s a quiet neighborhood,” said James Martin.
Brenda Vance said she’s noticed an uptick in break-ins and property crime but nothing like this. That’s why she takes steps to protect herself.
“There’s been a lot of cars broken into lately,” Vance said. “I feel pretty safe most of the time, I’ve got a dog it will help, and I carry pepper spray.”
