Memphis airport braces for ‘significant surge’ in Thanksgiving travelers

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - With Thanksgiving just three days away, millions of Americans are getting ready to visit loved ones.

If you plan to fly, there are some big changes you'll see at Memphis International.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for the airport.

This year, airport officials anticipate a significant surge in the number of passengers going through.

Because of that, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Like millions of people, Elizabeth Amarena is spending Thanksgiving with family.

"Just to spend a week together just an intense time together and enjoy each other’s company,” Amarena said.

WMC found her at Memphis International, waiting for her brother and his family to land from Germany.

AAA says four million more people will fly this Thanksgiving than last. Analysts say a stronger economy means people have more money to spend.

Friday was the airport’s busiest day with 9,400 passengers boarding plane, and it’s just the beginning.

“It is going to be a little more congested here,” said MEM spokesman Glen Thomas. “It’s going to have a little more hustle and bustle, so we want to make sure people are prepared.”

Thomas encourages passengers to arrive two hours early.

"That just gives you plenty of time to park, get you through security and to your gate in plenty of time,” Thomas said.

He also recommends passengers review TSA’s prohibited items list to avoid any problems.

AAA says the best days to travel will be on Thanksgiving Day, Friday or Saturday. Sunday will be quite busy, as people head back home.
