MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Making championship appearances is what Memphis Tigers head basketball coach Penny Hardaway is all about, even if he doesn't have the team to get him there right now.
But don't tell him that.
The first college team for the first-year UofM head coach is made up of four senior holdovers from the previous staff.
It’s also made up of three rookies and a couple of transfers Hardaway brought in after his hire in late April.
This group has managed to cobble out a .500 record against good competition so far, but it's not good enough, according to Hardaway.
"I'm all in for this year,” Hardaway said. “Honestly, we should be, instead of 3-3, 5-1 at least. I'm growing as a coach, and I'm not looking to next year. I'm looking to this year. I want to compete. I don't want to be a laughingstock, and then talk about moral victories… that doesn't do us any good. We're trying to build the culture, and the guys here, we're all going to have to step up and push towards that culture."
The Tigers next play #19 ranked Texas Tech in Miami on Saturday.
