Suspect tries to run over deputy, leads police on chase in officer-involved shooting

Burglar suspect shot by deputy

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened overnight.

Deputies say the shooting happened at the Home Inn & Suites at 7967 Lowrance Road when a deputy was trying to arrest 24-year-old Anthony Williams who was breaking into a car.

The deputy fired shots, hitting Williams in his upper body as he sped away.

Several deputies joined a brief car chase that led to Baptist Hospital where they took Williams into custody.

Williams was treated at the hospital for his injuries and later booked in jail.

WMC spoke with the manager of the hotel who said surveillance video of the incident was captured and turned over to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

She also said there has been several burglaries and robberies in the area over the past year.

The Wilsons are raising their children in the neighborhood next door to the hotel.

"That brings danger close to my house," said Anthony Wilson.

They have been in the area 3 years and said they were recently victims of car burglaries and break-ins.

"Being a victim of crime and having my own car stolen out of my driveway I felt violated. I didn’t think it would happen in this area necessarily," said Marlah Wilson.

The Wilson’s said deputies patrol the area often but feel it is time for neighbors to stand their ground.

They shared a message for perpetrators.

"It’s not worth your life, it’s not worth it. Whatever you’re getting out of the cars you will eventually get caught."
