MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Head Coach Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers return to FedEx Forum Thursday night to face off with East Carolina.
The University of Memphis is 8-1 so far this season.
Both teams come into the game with a 1-1 record in conference play. However, ECU has a little more momentum after beating a Cincinnati team Saturday.
The Tigers are coming off of a double digit loss at Houston Sunday.
Penny has made it clear that he is not happy with his team’s physicality and effort after that one.
He told his team they can not win against tough opponents if they do not play with maximum energy every play.
Penny desperately wants an NCAA Tournament berth in his first year, even if no one else believes the Tigers can get there.
“We gotta prove them wrong. That’s still not supposed to be my mentality with my guys. To go in and go, ‘okay guys, I don’t think we’re going to make the NCAA Tournament, but if we beat some of these teams.’ You know what I mean? I’m a competitor 'till the end," said Penny.
Looking closer at ECU, all eyes will be on guard Shawn Williams.
He is the team’s second leading scorer and reigning AAC rookie of the year.
Williams had a monstrous game against Memphis last season with 30 points.
He is Little Rock native, so it’s like a home game for him.
A lot of family and friends are expected to come out and the Tigers plan to key in on him.
Tip off for Memphis versus ECU is set for 8 p.m.
