MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Memphis teacher has been arrested and accused of sex crimes involving a child.

Jasmine Edmond, 24, was arrested Jan. 14 and is charged with two counts of sexual battery by an authority figure.

Edmond, who formerly taught algebra at Trezevant High School, was indicted in November. She is out on a $50,000 bond.

According to the indictment, she was sexually involved with a male student between Nov. 1, 2017 and Jan. 1, 2018.

The alleged sexual activity happened at her apartment in the Raleigh area.

Edmond is a current employee at Power Center Academy, which is part of the Gestalt Community Schools.

On Wednesday, Gestalt Community Schools released this statement:

We were shocked and disappointed when Jasmine Edmond was arrested. She was a new teacher at Power Center Academy, and we performed a thorough background check last summer, which showed no indication of such behavior. She is currently on administrative leave from Gestalt Community Schools pending further investigation. Although we have no knowledge at this time that her behavior impacted any of our scholars, we are doing our own internal due diligence. We will fully assist the Memphis Police Department with their investigation.
