Whitehaven house fire ruled arson

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An early morning fire in Whitehaven destroyed a home on Eason Avenue near Lexie Street.

While no one was at home at the time of the fire, neighbors said a family lives there but hasn't been seen in a few days.

Smoke and small flames were still billowing from the roof and the back of the home as late as 3 a.m. as fire crews worked to control the fire for more than two hours.

A Memphis Fire Department battalion chief said there were no injuries among his crew, but the home is a total loss.

A neighbor with surveillance cameras surrounding her home showed WMC’s Jerica Phillips video that the neighbor believes proves someone started the fire. Fire investigators took that video in as evidence.

Hours later, firefighters determined that the fire was arson.

With colder temperatures moving in, it's important to remember to be careful when using space heaters to keep your home warm.
