MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Memphis Fire Department remembered one of the last surviving members of the “First Original 12 African American Firefighters” Thursday.
Visitation services were held at Mississippi Blvd Christian Church for retired Division Chief Floyd Elbert Newsum, Sr. who died Sunday.
Newsum, along with 11 other men, became the first African American firefighters for the city of Memphis in 1955.
Those who knew him best say he loved being a firefighter and should be remembered for breaking racial barriers.
"I think that's how he should be remembered as this kind of no-nonsense firefighter who treated everybody the same and was fair," said Horace Newsum, son.
Funeral services will be held at Mississippi Blvd Christian Church Friday at 11 a.m.
