MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Tennessee State Parks, elected officials, and local partners gathered Monday for a volunteer waste tire cleanup.
The cleanup was held at T.O. Fuller State Park.
It's part of Tennessee State Parks' Tires to Trails Program, which will recycle waste tires collected from designated locations for material to be made into a new pedestrian trail at the park.
“We worked with TDOT, Federal Highway Administration, as well as the Sustainable Practices Group at TDEC to write grants and get about $650,000 worth of grant funds to invest here in the park,” said Michael Meister with Tennessee State Parks.
The funds from TDOT will be used to count and process at least 36,000 tires from the surrounding community.
The pedestrian trail will have a longer lifespan and easier to maintain.
