Though our time together has been short, my love for you runs deep.
It all started in the ’90s when my mom was stationed on Millington Naval Base. I was just 2 years old, and though I don’t remember much about that time fate would soon bring us back together.
When we met again it was the summer of 2017. Despite the unbearably hot temperatures, I knew there was something special about you. I was so intrigued by this big, little city filled with incredibly kind and generous people.
Your authenticity left a lasting impression on me -- the perfect mixture of southern charm and grit and grind. Your food is out of this world and the soulful music instantly brings me to my feet, dancing like nobody’s watching.
But above all - my favorite thing about you is your perseverance. You’ve been through a lot of painful, tragic and hurtful times, but what I love about you, Memphis, is your ability to pick up the pieces. You have the ability to try to get back on your feet, bring people together and create a better city with better opportunities.
Sure, we've made progress and still have a long way to go. But it is a privilege to experience this growth with you.
Memphis, you have such a special place in my heart. Who would have thought the 2-year-old little girl who didn’t remember much about our first encounter would go on to fall in love with you and create one-of-a-kind memories that will last a lifetime.
Happy 200th Birthday!
