MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis University School cornerback Maurice Hampton never wavered on his commitment to Louisiana State University.
The four-star prospect, who’s also a first round Major League Baseball draft prospect, verbally committed to LSU three years ago, and officially became a Tiger Wednesday.
“The consistency with the coaches. Allowing me to play both sports. Going to do it at a high level. I knew what I wanted to do a long while back, and I stuck with it, and I’m excited to get to Baton Rouge," Hampton said.
“I have family near Louisiana. I’m comfortable with the coaches, the football and baseball program. Baseball is preseason number one, so, I’m just blessed to be able to do it.”
Hampton did get a strong push from Auburn University late into his recruitment, but said his “heart was in Baton Rouge.”
Hampton is currently ranked 27th on the MLB’s 2019 prospect watch list. He’s projected as a first round pick in June’s MLB Draft.
“I’m just going to take it day by day," Hampton said. "Enjoy my senior year, enjoy my senior baseball season and see what happens in June.”
“(My family and I ) put a plan in place for what would happen in specific situations, so, whatever happens happens. I’m just blessed with where ever I go. (LSU) is aware of everything going on. They said they have a spot for me no matter what happens.”
“Obviously, playing college sports is a business, so, I’ll have a small personal life, and I can be a kid a little bit, but I think either way I go I’ll be doing business while I’m playing sports.”
