Soccer fever heating up in Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An empty event space will soon be home to Memphis’ soccer fanatics.

Sylvia Leon and Roberto Cantu got the idea for “Soccer City 901," a soccer-themed sports bar and family restaurant, during the World Cup last summer.

"There was no place to watch the World Cup and as I said we were soccer fans, so we wanted to watch the games and we had to watch them at our house or some small restaurant where they had it," Leon said.

The former event space, on 3 acres of property, will be turned into a large complex where fans and families can come enjoy the game.

Out in the back, a huge space will be used for customers to come kick a soccer ball on two soccer fields. The space is big enough to hold matches of five versus five.

Memphis' new professional soccer team 901 FC had its first practice this week.

Leon and Cantu are encouraged that 901 FC’s events have drawn excitement and large crowds.

"We want to make a partnership with them and work with them so when they have away games people can come here and watch the games and have some players come sign autographs," Leon said.

901 FC's first game will be in March. There is still plenty of work to be done at Soccer City 901's location on Shelby Oaks Drive.

“It’s going, it’s working, moving along. I’m hoping that sometime in April we can open,” Leon said.
