Passenger dies of heart attack after crashes on I-40; charges pending for 2 drivers

Ambulance, deputy, trooper involved crash while responding to earlier accident

I-40 westbound shut down after crash

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - Several first responders were involved in a crash on I-40 early Wednesday morning while responding to a separate crash in the same area. Investigators say a passenger in the first crash later died of a heart attack.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crashes, which happened at mile marker 22 in Shelby County near Lakeland.

In the first crash, THP says Daniel Barksdale was driving an 18 wheeler behind Isaac Guerrero when Barksdale hit the rear of Guerrero’s 18-wheeler. Barksdale later told THP he didn’t remember what happened before waking up in the median.

Barksdale went to the hospital with injuries from that crash. Guerrero wasn’t hurt but his passenger, Antonino Mendez-Gonzalez, had a heart attack after the crash and died.

While investigating the first crash, THP says an ambulance crashed into a THP patrol car and a sheriff’s deputy’s SUV. Both the trooper and the deputy were outside of their vehicles investigating the first accident when the second crash occurred. Neither was injured. The ambulance driver, Matthew Christianson, and his passenger, John Conrey, both went to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

THP says the trooper and the deputy had their vehicles’ emergency equipment engaged when the ambulance hit them.

Charges are pending for Barksdale in the earlier crash and Christianson in the second crash.
