MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Schools’ students at Macon Hall Elementary School celebrated Black History Month Thursday with a musical performance featuring special guests from Royal Studios.

Music teacher Megan Smith and second-grade teacher Tanya Mitchell led second- and fifth-grade students in songs celebrating African American culture.

Musicians from Royal Studios joined in, including Grammy Award-nominee Rev. Charles Hodges of Hi Rhythm and drummer Steve Potts who has played with Al Green, Greg Allman, Wynona Judd and Cyndi Lauper.

Artwork drawn by art teacher Amanda Dest and featuring African American leaders adorned the walls of the gymnasium filled with students, teachers and families.

Students also performed a skit about Madame C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire in the United States.
