NASHVILLE, TN (WMC) - Tennessee Governor Bill Lee says he “regrets” attending so-called “Old South Parties” while he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order at Auburn University.
The Tennessean newspaper says Lee was a member of that fraternity from 1977 until 1981, and the group was known to embrace Confederate imagery.
Gov. Lee told the paper that he now believes it was insensitive to participate in the events.
"I never intentionally acted in an insensitive way, but with the benefit of hindsight, I can see that participating in that was insensitive and I’ve come to regret it," Gov. Lee said in The Tennessean’s report.
The governor's spokesperson says Lee has never worn blackface.
