MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A kitten who was stolen from an animal shelter has been safely returned.
Video shows a man and woman inside the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County Thursday. Deputies said the two walked inside at 4:45 p.m. and stole Mavis the kitten.
Mavis was returned to the shelter safely Friday morning.
The Humane Society’s executive director Ellen Zahariadis says Mavis was discovered missing when crews were cleaning up the kennel space Thursday evening.
"It looks like two people were involved with taking the cat out of the kennel. One put it in his jacket and they left the building," said Zahariadis.
Zahariadis says the woman on the video and a family member returned Mavis.
"It's amazing how quickly we had a good resolution to this," said Zahariadis.
She says all visitors must sign in.
It’s unclear if the two suspects signed in, but Zahariadis says workers crosschecked the list after Mavis was stolen. However, since they didn’t know who the people in the video were they couldn’t match up any names.
She says these protocols will be re-evaluated.
“We are going to be meeting as a group to talk about things we could do different,” said Zahariadis.
