MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police are investigating after two people were shot Friday morning in Southeast Memphis.
The shooting happened on Birch Lake Drive before 4 a.m.
“It could have been me. It literally happened right across from me," said neighbor Curtis Johnson.
Police said two people were shot, one in the head.
One victim has been released from the hospital. The other is in fair condition.
Police said the victims were asleep on a mattress in the living room when someone fired shots into the Waterview apartment.
Curtis Johnson has lived at the Waterview Apartment Homes for about a year. He says he’s had his fair share of bad experiences.
“I’ve had packages come up missing and stolen. I have a car right there that’s gotten hit at this apartment," said Johnson.
CAPREIT owns and manages Waterview Apartment Homes as well as 14-thousand apartment units across the country.
According to CAPREIT's website, in 2017, it bought the then Madison Cypress Lakes apartments for nearly $48 million before rebranding it Waterview Apartments.
The previous year, Memphis Police worked a homicide, a sexual assault, and a stolen car in a lake all at that complex.
Currently Waterview Apartments is gated.
Curtis Johnson says after Friday morning’s shooting he doesn’t feel safe and wants changes to be made.
“They need to do around the clock security. They need to install cameras as well as alarm systems for each one of these units,” said Johnson.
Police said neighbors called 911 after hearing the shots ring out. There’s no word on any potential suspect at this time.
WMC Action News 5 reached out to Waterview Apartment Homes and CAPREIT, but have not heard back.
