BALTIMORE, MD (WMC) - For the first time, a drone has been used to deliver a kidney to a transplant patient.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center say the recipient was a 44-year-old woman.
Drones have been tested in the past to deliver medical supplies, but this is the first time it was used to deliver an organ.
Doctors say using drones would expedite the delivery of organs that don’t last very long outside the human body.
According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, there are nearly 115,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list.
