Truck driver charged with death of furniture store manager

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A retired police officer is accused of killing a man at a furniture store in Memphis Thursday.

Police said Timothy Saunders, who now works as a truck driver, got into an argument with American Freight Furniture manager Thomas Hartman over truck loading.

Police said Saunders walked out of the warehouse and returned with a gun, killing Hartman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the store on Highway 64 near Kate Bond Road.

Officers said Saunders left the scene in his 18-wheeler but was taken into custody at Highway 64 and I-40.

He is charged with first-degree murder.

A spokesman with Clarksville, Tennessee Police Department says Saunders is a former police officer. He was hired in March 1989 and promoted to sergeant in 2001. He retired from the department in November 2017.
