UNION CITY, TN (KFVS) - A UT Martin Skyhawks dancer was found dead at a home in Union City, Tennessee on Saturday, May 11.

Communities in northwest Tennessee are mourning the loss of a UT Martin student Decora Alexander, 20, who has stabbed to death over the weekend.

Funeral arrangements are with Hornbeak Funeral Chapel. Her funeral is taking place at Kingdom Harvest in South Fulton on Saturday, May 18.

Jayla Brown served as captain of the University of Tennessee Martin Dance Team and says she took Decora Alexander under her wing when she first started college.

“We had group texts and some of the dance team members were even her roommates,” Brown said. "And when I found out I kept calling her phone and I said it’s not funny because she would play little jokes when she got upset and wouldn’t respond.”

According to the Obion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at a home on Joe Fry Lane, where family members of Tony Mosley, 29, were trying to enter.

Brown says she felt hurt and helpless when she learned Alexander had been stabbed to death at a home in Union City.

“She had just moved, she had just gotten her own apartment and I think the news kind of took everybody at a standstill because we were all around her, trying to see her move forward. We were seeing her grow and get all of this stuff in line with herself," Brown said.

Union City High School principal Jacob Cross said Alexander graduated in 2017 and was active in track, cheerleading, and did community service through the KEY club.

“Anytime we lose one of our own it’s heartbreaking," Cross said. “Decora was always very independent, outspoken and self-assured and she always wanted to take up for other people and wanted to give back to those folks.”

Deputies with Obion County Sheriff’s Office also found 29-year-old Tony Mosley covered in blood and cuts inside the same home.

Mosely is in stable condition and recovering at a nearby hospital and at this time it's unclear is he is a suspect in Alexander's death.

People who knew her want to keep the 20-year-old college students memory alive.

“Decora had a bright future ahead of her,” said Principal Cross. “We’re sad and our hearts go out and our prayers go out to her and her family.”

Brown is encouraging Alexander’s family and friends to reach out and express their feelings.

“We’re just a phone call away, not what it is and no matter what time," Brown said. "We want to be around, we want to be apart of everything, and still make sure even though she is not her with us that she still does exist.”

Counseling services are still available at both schools and a candlelight vigil will be held for Alexander at the UT Martin football field Thursday evening, May 16 at 8:30 p.m.

You can click here to donate on GoFundMe for funeral expenses.

“There will be a balloon release, but they will bring them because its state law we can only have 20,” Brown said. “Candles will be provided and we will wear purple and white in honor of domestic violence.”

Alexander’s death is currently under investigation.

UT Martin Athletics has offered their condolences on social media for the loss of Decora Alexander.

In a statement, the Skyhawks head dance coach said. in part:

“She was always working to be a better dancer and wanted to see her teammates grow and succeed with her. She will be greatly missed both on and off the court.”

According to UT Martin, Decora was majoring in health and human performance and was in her freshman year at college.

Originally from South Fulton, and a graduate of Union City High School, Decora was part of the 11-member Skyhawks dance squad, entertaining crowds at UT Martin’s home basketball game.
