MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - What does Penny Hardaway do for an encore after getting commitments from a 4-star shooting guard and the top graduate transfer in the nation over the weekend? How about sign another 4-star player to the backcourt?
Boogie Ellis announced on his Twitter late Monday that he is coming to the University of Memphis.
Ellis is rated the number 37 overall prospect nationally, and the number 6 combo guard in the 247Sports’ Composite Rankings for the Class of 2019.
The San Diego High School star originally signed with Duke, but asked for and was granted his release from the Blue Devils May 2. No less than 9 top tier schools lined up for his services after he reopened his recruitment, but Ellis picked the Tigers over national champion Virginia, Arizona, Oregon, Gonzaga, UCLA, Kansas, Vanderbilt. Washington and Georgetown.
Considered an excellent outside shooter, the 6′2″ Ellis is also a capable on ball defender and a good rebounder despite his size. His signing raises Memphis’ recruiting class to number 4 nationally. The Tigers have one more scholarship to give.
