MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - University of Memphis Athletic Director Tom Bowen is stepping down from his position, the school announced Tuesday.
Allie Prescott was named to take Bowen's position as the interim athletic director.
Bowen has served in the role for seven years and said he wants to pursue a new career opportunity.
“I know that the athletic program here at the University of Memphis will continue to achieve great success both in the classroom and on the fields and courts of competition. It has been my privilege to serve this University,” Bowen said.
At an introductory press conference for Prescott, Rudd was asked for any explanation of Bowen’s resignation. He declined to give any further details, saying it was a question for Bowen.
Prescott is a Memphis alum and has previously served as general manager of the Memphis Redbirds from 1997-2001.
He is a member of the M Club Hall of Fame as a baseball player in the 1960s.
Prescott said he’s humbled and honored to serve as AD for his alma mater. He grew up a Tigers fan and has two degrees from the university.
“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a Tiger,” Prescott said.
He said Rudd reached out to him two weeks ago about taking the role. It was a job he wanted 25 years ago, but was passed up on.
The school will begin the search for a new athletic director immediately, according to President David Rudd.
