Nathaniel Wilkins admitted to police that the gun was his and he had left it in an area where the children could reach it.

Wilkins is charged with reckless homicide.

“They feel like if they need it quickly it’s not readily available so they don’t spend time putting a gun lock, which is a simple thing to do," Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Beasley with the Memphis Police Department said.

In response to this latest tragedy, Memphis police reminded the public about the free gun locks available at all precincts.

Officers demonstrated it takes just minutes to secure a weapon with a gun lock.

“It can’t be loaded. It can’t be used. It can’t be fired," Officer Lynnette Sutton.

Keeping a gun from firing not only prevents loss of life, but lifelong trauma to the child pulling the trigger.

“Adverse childhood experiences, which could be this type of traumatic event occur in about 64% of children.," Dr. Rebekah Lemmons with Youth Villages said.

She says a traumatic event like this has a lasting impact on a child and their family.

“Immediate impacts on any type of mental health or child behaviors. There are also longer term impacts so outcomes like chronic health, other associated health risks, income, education and also impacts on the entire family unit," Dr. Lemmons said.
