MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Sunday, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris vetoed the allocation of $1 million to help the University of Memphis build and renovate a swimming pool.

Harris said several groups, like the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center and the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH), contacted him about the pool project, pushing for a pay raise for the university’s lowest paid workers instead.

The groups believe the University of Memphis should first put a plan in place to bring its lowest-paid workers up to a living wage and Harris supports them.

He is now urging the university to put forth a plan to resolve the issue. He says until then, he cannot endorse the budget allocation to the University of Memphis.
