New MS law looks to crack down on work zone speeding

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A new law in Mississippi is increasing penalties for reckless drivers in work zones.

The new blue light law became an active law on July 1. It allows contractors to hire law enforcement officers to monitor work zones and crack down on people who don't obey speed limits in those zones.

State transportation officials believe the new law will provide more safety for workers in road construction zones.

In many cases, those workers have to operate very close to moving traffic.

Authorities believe the presence of law enforcement will make motorists to take more precautions when they see the orange barrels and flashing lights.
