BRICKEYS, Ark. (WMC) - Search crews are doing all they can as the search for escaped inmate Calvin Adams continues after he practically vanished from the East Arkansas Regional Prison Monday morning.
Adams, 49, is currently serving a life sentence without parole for crimes committed in Greene County.
Officials at the prison discovered Adams missing after a unit-wide count of inmates at 4:30 a.m. Monday. He was last seen in the prison’s boiler room around midnight on surveillance video, according to officials.
“There has been no sign of him. Either off the property or inside the property," said Dina Tyler, an employee of Arkansas Department of Corrections.
Tyler says it’s possible Adams is still on the property. It’s a large perimeter with 1,650 inmates, several buildings and an electric fence. Tyler said it would be very difficult for someone to get around it.
“It is a serious fence. The fence is not set on stun, it is a lethal fence. It circles all the property right up next to the building," said Tyler.
Prison officials are looking through Adams’ property for clues. They also have helicopters and K-9s assisting with the search.
“We have had the dogs out. They hit a trial but it didn’t pan out for us. State Police has had their helicopter in the air and we’ve had all sort of officers on horseback and cars looking," said Tyler.
Adams was convicted of capital murder in 1995 for kidnapping and shooting a man. This isn’t his first time escaping from a correctional facility.
“Back in 2009 he and another inmate escaped from the Cummings unit. They were gone 3 or 4 days and found in New York about 90 miles south of buffalo," said Tyler.
Right now, neighbors are on edge and hoping Adams is back in custody sooner rather than later.
Morgan Reid lives just 25 miles from the East Arkansas Regional Prison in Brickeys. He says the thought of a murderer on the run is frightening.
“You never know what these people are doing these days,” said Reid.
Officials say they are also questioning Adam’s friends to see if they have any information on where he might be.
