Missing boater in Clay County found dead

CLAY COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) - Authorities in Clay County found the body of a missing boater around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday after he was reported missing Sunday.

According to Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller, a local diver found the body of 71-year-old Alan Aurther Peterson.

Several agencies, including the Lawrence County Dive Team, members Arkansas Game & Fish, and the Clay County Emergency Task Force assisted in the search and recovery.

Earlier this week, agents with Arkansas Game and Fish, using sonar, located the missing man’s boat.

Miller said the man, who is from Scotland, Arkansas, and his brother were searching for mussel shells when their boat sank.

The jonboat went down near Hollands Lodge, Miller said.

The Clay County Emergency Task Force and Arkansas Game & Fish had been searching for the missing boater since 5 p.m Sunday, Sept. 29.

The search was suspended Monday, but crews resumed the search Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
