9-year-old critically injured in overnight shooting on Castalia St.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A 9-year-old boy will spend his Thanksgiving holiday recovering after he was shot Tuesday near the Castalia Heights neighborhood.

Police say it all started at the “Q-Mart” convenience store on Lamar Avenue.

The boy’s dad told Investigators that he and his son witnessed a store clerk and another man get into a verbal altercation.

He also told investigators he didn’t know the man, and had no interaction with him or the store clerk.

Shortly after, the father and his son left the store and saw the man from the altercation sitting in a sliver sedan.

The boy’s father told investigators he was headed home when the silver sedan started following him.

He told police he pulled over near Magnolia Elementary to let the car pass, and that’s when he heard a gunshot.

“I think we have to do a better job and maybe pay more attention to what’s going on in our surroundings,” said Jattir Ragland, who lives near Magnolia Elementary.

Ragland told WMC Action News 5 that he and his mother heard gunshots Tuesday night.

“When it happens to one of our little ones they’re just living their lives, they’re innocent so my heart really goes out," Ragland said.

Police say after the shooting the dad drove his son to the Memphis Police Airways Precinct.

The 9-year-old was then rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s hospital in critical condition.

Police confirm the boy was shot in his back.

Investigators say developed additional Persons of Interest have been identified and located regarding the incident.

There have been no arrests and the cause of the shooting is undetermined.

The investigation is ongoing.
