MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - It's time for Memphians to show their giving spirit once again.
One Family Memphis and Memphis Rox are holding a winter warm-up drive through noon on Friday.
They are collecting gently-used or new winter clothing items to give to those in the Soulsville community.
“Many of the folks that work in this gym are living in this community and they know what the need is -- the need is to be able to stay warm” said Valerie Morris, Executive Director of One Family Memphis.
The group is asking everyone to bring warm winter gear to Memphis Rox off Mclemore Avenue.
They are hoping to receive hats, gloves, scarves and new or gently-used winter coats.
“All sizes -- male, female, children, toddlers -- anything that anyone has we would be greatly appreciative of,” said Morris.
They are also collecting toys for children in the Soulsville area.
“Everybody who needs a coat gets a coat -- everyone who needs a toy gets a toy, so that every kid in this community doesn't have to go without this year,” said Chris Dean, One Family Memphis Director of Outreach.
One Family Memphis reports that 63 percent of the children living in or near the Soulsville community live in poverty.
Dean said that Memphis Rox provides them with a safe place to go, without economic barriers. But for the holidays, the group hopes to provide the community with even more.
“I'm hoping that we will be able to serve hundreds of people from this community, to keep them warm and offer them a fabulous Christmas,” said Morris.
The items that are collected will be distributed on Saturday, Dec. 21 from noon until 3 p.m.
