MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis is the newest city in the country with Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband service.
Mayor Jim Strickland made the announcement Thursday live on WMC Action News 5 alongside Maggie Hallbach with Verizon.
“It’s stronger, it’s faster, it raises the quality of life, it helps businesses, and I think the real impact we don’t even know yet because new industries are created with new technology,” the mayor said.
Strickland says this is big for businesses in the Bluff City.
“Who knows what industry is going to pop up because of this new technology,” the mayor said.
Hallbach explains that 5G is a new technology for wireless customers.
“It is called Ultra Wideband. It uses an entirely entirely new type of radio system that allows our customers to experience incredible speeds and very, very low latency,” said Hallbach. “And as Mayor Strickland pointed out, we anticipate that this will entirely change the way that we all live, work and play.”
Verizon says 5G Ultra Wideband service offers users near real-time mobile experiences with super-fast speeds, ultra-low latency and massive bandwidth. 5G Ultra Wideband allows for video chatting with almost no lag, large downloads and 4K video streaming with virtually no buffering.
“Imagine wanting to download a Netflix movie and the flight attendant says you have to shut your phones off,” Hallbach explained. “That entire movie on 4G would take several minutes. With 5G it will literally be in a matter of seconds.”
5G Ultra Wideband service is now available in parts of downtown, midtown, Cooper-Young and east Memphis. The service will expand to other parts of the city and Shelby County in the coming months.
Memphis is the 22nd city in the U.S. to get Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband service.
Not every device is 5G compatible, that includes Apple products. According to Verizon, the 5G compatible devices are the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, moto z2, z3 and z4 combined with the 5G moto mod, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, the Samsung Galaxy Note10 5G, the Samsung Galaxy Note10+5G and the Inseego MIFI M1000.
