MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A bill in the Tennessee legislature looks to put a stop to a certain type of crime theft from Mid-South porches.

The bill would strengthen penalties against porch pirates making the first offense punishable based on the value of the stolen item.

Second and future offenses would lead to felony charges that carry jail time up to 12 years and a potential $5,000 fine.

Senate Bill 20-62 passed in committee Monday.
