MANILA, Ark. (KAIT) - A Manila police officer is on paid administrative leave following a fatal officer-involved shooting, as authorities release more details in connection with the case.
According to Manila Police Chief Chris Hill, Sgt. Mike Shively is now on leave.
Hill said there was a physical altercation and that there was a fatality. Christopher Palmer, 37, of Manila died.
The shooting happened Tuesday night at a home on a side road just off Highway 18 near the Dollar General, according to Mississippi County Sheriff Dale Cook.
Earlier Wednesday, Hill did tell our reporter that the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Family of Palmer say they want answers.
“It’s just no good, it’s sad you know and everything," stepfather Paul Cravens says.
Both Cravens and Palmer’s mother were in the living room when he was shot and killed.
Sgt. Shively asked Palmer if he had any weapons on him, according to Cravens. Then things escalated.
“He said, ‘Stop, or I’m going to tase you.’ He didn’t tase him he grabbed his gun, his side piece and shot six fires, six shots in his direction," Cravens says.
The family says they hope investigations are handled correctly so the family can get closure.
