More than 500 new cases of coronavirus, 8 new deaths reported in Tennessee

Memphis/Shelby County COVID-19 Task Force meeting -- May 11

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tennessee state health officials reported 559 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and eight more deaths.

The Tennessee Department of Health reports 15,544 confirmed cases and 251 deaths across the state -- up from 14,985 cases and 243 deaths Sunday. So far, 1,344 people have been hospitalized and 8,038 have recovered from the virus. More than 273,000 tests have been administered.

The average age of COVID-19 cases in Tennessee is 43, according to TDH. Deaths have occurred in every age group but the highest percentage -- 35 percent -- are people 81 and older.

TDH reports 3,372 cases and 70 deaths in Shelby County -- up from 3,315 cases and 67 deaths announced by the Shelby County Health Department earlier Monday.

SCHD reports nearly 59 percent of the county’s confirmed cases have recovered from the virus.

There are ongoing outbreaks at more than a dozen long-term care facilities in Shelby County where 262 residents and staff have tested positive and 21 people have died. This does not include resolved outbreaks.

The largest outbreak is at the Highlands of Memphis Health and Rehabilitation Center where 78 residents and staff members have tested positive and four people have died.

  • Cross -- 29 cases; 20 recoveries
  • Lee -- 5 cases; 1 death; 3 recoveries
  • Mississippi -- 52 cases; 17 recoveries
  • Phillips -- 4 cases; 1 death; 3 recoveries
  • Poinsett -- 25 cases; 2 deaths; 19 recoveries
  • St. Francis -- 278 cases; 82 recoveries
