TDH reports more than 150 new cases of COVID-19, 4 new deaths, nearly 12,000 recoveries

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Department of Health has reported an increase of 154 confirmed COVID-19 cases and an addition of four deaths.

The state’s total hit 18,000 with a surge of 623 cases Monday and, as of Wednesday afternoon, is now at 18,378 and 309 deaths statewide.

So far there have been more than 1,500 hospitalizations and nearly 12,000 Tennesseans have recovered from the virus.

Health officials have confirmed 4,005 coronavirus cases and 88 deaths across Shelby County -- an increase of 128 cases in one day.

Officials said 66 percent of the county’s coronavirus cases have recovered.

The latest testing showed a 9.8-percent positivity rate in Shelby County. The testing positivity rate is the percentage of all tests conducted that are found to be positive. SCHD wants to keep the positivity rate below 10. Wednesday’s update shows a significant increase since the last update May 14, which was 7.59 percent in Shelby County.

SCHD director Alisa Haushalter said the uptick in cases can be traced back to Mother’s Day weekend.

Dozens of long-term care facilities across Shelby County have experienced coronavirus outbreaks/clusters.

More than 320 residents and staff have tested positive for the virus, 35 people have died. This does not include facilities with resolved investigations.
