Tennessee coronavirus cases top 19,300 with 433-case increase, 315 deaths reported statewide

Memphis/Shelby Co. COVID-19 joint task force update -- May 22

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tennessee health officials have confirmed COVID-19 cases have topped 19,300 statewide, reporting a 433-case increase since Thursday afternoon.

So far, 19,394 coronavirus cases and 315 deaths have been confirmed across Tennessee. More than 368,000 people have been tested with more than 1,500 hospitalizations. And as numbers increase, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee is encouraging people to get tested.

The Tennessee Department of Health says 12,566 Tennesseans have recovered from the virus.

Health officials with Shelby County Health Department have confirmed 4,083 coronavirus cases and 91 deaths countywide.

Thursday, the Shelby County Health Department confirmed 4,034 coronavirus cases and 91 deaths - an increase of 49 cases in one day.

Officials said 68.9-percent of the county’s coronavirus cases have recovered.

The SCHD has released a map showing the zip codes with the highest coronavirus cases in Shelby County. The map is based on cases per 100,000 population. Currently, the 38118 zip code has the highest amount of cases.

More than 20 long-term care facilities across Shelby County have experienced coronavirus outbreaks/clusters.

Currently, more than 400 residents and staff have tested positive for the virus, 35 people have died. This does not include facilities with resolved investigations.
