Tennessee COVID-19 cases increase by 551; state’s total tops 26,000 with 417 deaths reported

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Department of Health says coronavirus cases have topped 26,000 statewide with 417 deaths reported.

Health officials are reporting an increase of 551 cases since Friday afternoon bringing the state’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 26,071. Nine additional deaths were also reported.

So far, there have been more than 491,000 Tennesseans tested for the virus and only 1,923 people have been hospitalized in connection to it.

TDH says 17,124 people have recovered from the virus in Tennessee.

Health officials confirmed 5,746 coronavirus cases and 125 deaths across Shelby County Saturday.

On Friday, the Shelby County Health Department identified 5,631 COVID-19 cases and 122 deaths. Those total has since increased by 115 cases and three deaths.

There have been nearly 84,000 people tested and recoveries account for 68% of cases in Shelby County.

At this time, more than 400 residents and staff have tested positive for the coronavirus at long-term care facilities in Shelby County, not including facilities with resolved outbreaks. So far, more than 50 people have died, including 19 at Quince Nursing and Rehab.

The Highlands of Memphis Health and Rehabilitation accounts for the majority of the cases with 66 residents and 27 staff members testing positive for the virus and seven deaths.

There are six facilities in Shelby County with previous outbreaks that are considered resolved. SCHD says these facilities have gone 28 days without a new case.
