Shelby County Commission declares Juneteenth a paid holiday beginning in 2021

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Starting next year, Shelby County will recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday for county employees.

The resolution was passed at Tuesday’s Shelby County Commission meeting.

Several states already observe Juneteenth.

The holiday honors June 19th, 1865 -- the day the last slaves in the Confederacy territory were emancipated.
