Deadly gunfire stuns Memphis community

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - One person is dead and two others are critically injured following a shooting in Whitehaven Friday.

“I just went to Dollar General. All you heard was gunshots. This is so shocking, so shocking, terrible,” said Alex Brown.

Those shots were fired at Shelby Drive and Neely Road in the middle of the day -- a busy intersection near a busy shopping center.

There were more than 10 bullet casing evidence markers. Police say it was a drive-by shooting.

Alex Brown said he took cover when he heard the shots.

“Got down again not no telling what they doing, got down.”

Andrew Walker heard it from inside his house.

“I heard something like four or five shots and I thought it was just a car,” said Andrew Walker, neighbor.

Andrew Walker and his wife, Barbara, have lived at the intersection for 40 years.

“Never happened before. We’ve had wrecks up here but a shooting ... uh, uh, nothing like this,” said Barbara Walker, neighbor.

Police say a white SUV drove up next to the right side of a white charger. The driver of the SUV opened fire, killing one man in the car, injuring another man and a woman in the car.

Relatives of the man who died tried to get to him but police held them back.

Large crowds of people gathered, watching the whole scene. Some were just trying to make sense of it.

“It’s real sad, you know. Losing your life because of nothing,” said Walker.

“It need to stop, it need to stop. A lot of things need to stop, broad daylight,” said Brown.

Other than a white SUV, investigators have not released a description of the shooter. But police want to find the suspect.
