Chicago issues quarantine order for Mid-South states

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - The total number of coronavirus cases in Tennessee hit 51,431 Sunday after state health officials reported nearly 1,300 new cases.

The Tennessee Department of Health says there are 51,061 confirmed cases and 370 are probable.

With nine new deaths reported Sunday, the state’s COVID-19 death toll is 646 with 25 of those considered probable as well.

Shelby County currently has the highest case count among counties in the Volunteer State, according to data from TDH.

Shelby County saw an increase of 405 new COVID-19 cases and one new death Sunday.

With more than 140,900 coronavirus tests in the county, there are 11,829 total cases and 198 deaths in connection to the virus.

There have been 7,442 recoveries in Shelby County accounting for about 63% of all cases.

The Shelby County Health Department says there are 5,700 residents in the quarantine at this time. In an effort to reduce the spread of the virus, health offices issued a mandatory mask order Friday requiring everyone over the age of two to wear masks in public.

The health department continues to investigate clusters of outbreaks at 14 long-term care facilities with 13 facility clusters considered resolved. SCHD says a cluster is considered resolved after a facility goes 28 consecutive days without identifying a new case.
