SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - Coronavirus cases have increased by 3,140 in the last 24 hours with the addition of three deaths statewide, according to state health officials.

The Tennessee Department of Health says the state’s total number of cases has reached 93,936 -- 92,943 are confirmed and 993 are probable cases.

With the latest deaths reported Sunday afternoon, Tennessee’s coronavirus death toll has reached 967.

Nearly 50 Tennesseeans have been hospitalized since with complications due to the virus since TDH’s last update. There have been more than 4,200 hospitalizations and the number continues to climb daily.

The Shelby County Health Department reported 276 new COVID-19 cases and 2 additional deaths Sunday morning.

Shelby County has now identified 18,764 total coronavirus cases and 262 deaths since March when the first case was confirmed.

Health officials say there are 5,210 active COVID-19 cases countywide and more than 8,000 people in quarantine.

As new cases are identified, hospital capacity has become scarce in the Mid-South. According to SCHD’s Healthcare Resource Tracking System, ICU utilization is currently at 86% not far from reaching a red zone.

City and county officials have each issued masks ordinances to help reduce the communal spread of the virus.

The health department also continues to investigating clusters at several long-term care facilities in Shelby County that have caused more than 76 deaths among residents and employees.

A separate set of facilities have resolved their clusters. A cluster is considered resolved once a facility has gone 28 consecutive days without reporting a new coronavirus case.
