TDH: More than 3,000 new COVID-19 cases in Tennessee

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Department of Health reported an increase of 3,088 new COVID-19 cases across the state Friday.

Health officials say the Volunteer State’s total number of cases is nearing 106,000 with 104,778 cases confirmed and 1,181 are probable.

TDH also reported an additional 27 deaths bringing the state’s death toll to 1,060.

So far, 66,357 Tennesseans have recovered from the virus.

Health officials have confirmed 415 new coronavirus cases and two more deaths in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Health Department has confirmed 20,797 COVID-19 cases and 275 total deaths countywide.

There are currently 5,176 active coronavirus cases in Shelby County. Seventy-three percent of the total cases have recovered and 8,164 are currently in quarantine.

As new cases are identified, hospital capacity has become scarce in the Mid-South. According to SCHD’s Healthcare Resource Tracking System, ICU utilization is currently at 88 percent.

Over the past few weeks, the county’s positivity rate has skyrocketed. However, new data from the SCHD shows the positivity rate has dropped to 14.1 percent.

Shelby County and the City of Memphis have both issued masks ordinances to help decrease communal transmission.

The health department also continues to investigating clusters at several long-term care facilities in Shelby County that have caused more than 75 deaths among residents and employees.

A separate set of facilities have resolved their clusters. A cluster is considered resolved once a facility has gone 28 consecutive days without reporting a new coronavirus case.
