MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man in connection with a homicide near a constriction site in Cordova.
Investigators say one person was pronounced dead at the scene after a shooting Friday morning.
WMC Action News 5 spoke to a project manager for the site who didn’t want to be identified.
He said he was not on the scene when the shooting happened, but his employees were.
“They told me it was break time and everybody was out. It was a normal break day and there was an argument between some guys and all of a sudden gunshots go off.”
The victim has not been identified by authorities, but the project manager says he was a good guy who was a hard worker.
“He actually taught me how to drive a forklift. That’s one thing I’m going to remember about this guy.”
He says he saw the victim Thursday and he’s devastated knowing one of his co-workers went to work expecting to go home at the end of the day but didn’t.
“It just hurts to see a guy every day and then you’re just going through your normal workday and all of a sudden this guy is gone so it’s nothing normal.”
The victim’s family was also on the scene but did not want to talk.
SCSO detectives have arrested 27-year-old Marcus Williams in connection with the homicide.
Witnesses say Williams shot the victim numerous times in the break area because the victim told Williams that he could not be on the job site with a firearm.
Williams then fled the scene. He was picked up from his house after he told detectives that he wanted to turn himself in.
Police say Williams confessed to going home from work, getting his gun , returning to work and shooting the victim because he believed the victim was talking about him.
Williams is charged with several felonies, including first degree murder, reckless endangerment, and convicted felon in possession of handgun.
